Author, teacher, and quiltmaker, Pat Holly has been quilting for over twenty years and entering competitions for the last ten. She attended the University of Michigan School of Art studying color, graphic design, and weaving and fabric design.

Pat has worked with her sister Sue Nickels on many award winning quilts such as the well known, The Beatles Quilt and The Space Quilt. One of Pat’s specialties is Miniature Applique winning numerous National and International awards.

MINIATURE MACHINE APPLIQUE In this four day workshop, students will learn the stitched raw edge machine applique technique. Pat’s technique for embellishing backgrounds and have the chance to make a 4” x 6” postcard picture to learn these skills. Next, students will be given a choice of patterns Pat has designed and provided and will make their own miniature applique quilt.

For years, Pat has been using her sewing machine for more than just applique and quilting. Explore the possibilities of your machine’s decorative (and utility) stitches. Learn how to prepare the fabric, test stitches, try out various threads and, best of all, play with your machine! Once you have made your embellished fabric, Pat will show you many examples of how to use it in your quilts. You will be amazed at what you can create! You need a machine with some decorative stitches.

Pat has developed specific skills while making her award-winning miniature machine appliquéd quilts. She will share tips for preparing and stitching tiny applique shapes. Learn how to use the raw edge fusible blanket stitch. Choose a pattern to make a 4” x 6” postcard picture incorporating these tips.

Once you have learned these techniques, you will have time to start your own miniature quilt. Pat will provide patterns for you to choose from and will help with fabric choices, etc.
